Visitors are always welcome and are under no obligation to join. In fact, anyone considering joining the temple is encouraged to visit and observe at least two classes, as well as visiting other schools, before making a commitment. In addition, senior instructors, junior instructors, students and office staff are readily available to answer questions.
The Chinese Kung-Fu Wu-Su Association is located at 28 West 27th on the 8th floor, in the heart of the flower district. It is accessible by most of the major subway lines; most conveniently the 'F' train at 23rd Street, the '1' train at 28th Street, and the 'R' and 'W' trains at 28th Street.
New students can join at any time. There are no specific beginners classes, although students are required to select a specific 1 day or 2 day basic class schedule; either Monday-Wednesday, Tuesday-Thursday, Friday-Sunday or a one day schedule of Friday, Saturday or Sunday. This way, a students' progress can be closely monitored by the senior and junior instructors.
After 3 months, a student may, with the permission of his or her senior instructor, attend as many as s/he wishes, but s/he must maintain attendance in the scheduled classes while attending other classes.
Tuition differs according to whether a 1 day or 2 day schedule is chosen.
Each class is broken up into groups, depending on the students' level of training, not necessarily rank. For instance, a class may be broken up into three groups, beginner, intermediate and advanced. Each group is lead by a qualified instructor and each class is supervised by a senior instructor or Master.
The two hour class begins with approximately forty-five minutes of general exercise, strength or endurance training. The remaining hour and fifteen minutes is spent on learning new techniques or refining old ones. Forms, breathing and meditation, as well as other practical applications, are also covered.
Within twenty-four to thirty-six months, a student may be eligible to take the test for their first "White Button" rank (1st degree). The test takes approximately 7-8 hours to complete and is given once a year in two parts: written (3-4 hours) and physical (4+ hours). Satisfactory completion of this test allows the student to pursue advanced training and to teach new students. A student may be eligible to test for second degree 3 to 5 years after being awarded the first degree rank.
The Association uses the traditional Chinese badge system of ranking. Degrees 1-5 are "White Button" ranks, Master (sixth degree) is a "Black Button" rank. There are then 4 "Black Button" ranks before achieving the title Grandmaster (a "Red Button" rank). On average, it takes approximately 20+ years of consistent study to achieve the level of Master.
Tuition is $50 per month for classes meeting once a week and $70 per month for classes meeting twice or three times a week. After three months of training a student may attend additional classes, with the appropriate instructors' permission.
The initial fee includes the cost of registration, a uniform, t-shirt, sash, sneakers and one month's tuition. There is a brief entrance exam and interview.
Kindly call us at (212) 725-0535 during our class hours for more information.
